Frequently Asked Questions
Time for some therapy mythbusting!
FAQ
Typically, what would happen after I receive your inquiry, is that I would send you a follow up email to schedule a free 15-minute connection call. During this call, I'll ask you some questions to get a better sense of what kind of support you're looking for. I'll outline how I typically work so that you can get a sense of my style and the areas that I have experience in. You'll have the chance to ask me any questions you have, and decide if I'm the right therapist for you. If you choose to proceed, we would schedule in a therapy assessment session for the day and time of your choosing. You'll be sent some consent forms to fill out before we meet, so be sure to fill those out.
There isn't a set amount of sessions. Everyone has different concerns, expectations, and insurance coverage, so therapy will look different for each person. I tend to work with more long-term clients because I put so much focus on building a healing relationship with my clients. So that work can last a bit longer. In our first session, we would have a conversation about your expectations for frequency and duration of therapy.
Each therapist structures their first sessions a bit differently. My approach is to build rapport and comfort in the initial meeting. First, we'll go through some important paperwork and I'll answer any questions you may have. Then, I'll spend some time getting to know you. It's important that I learn about what you're struggling with, but I also care about getting to know the real you (your hobbies, interests, important relationships, etc.) You're also more than welcome to ask me questions! I truly value your comfort so if you don't want to jump into anything too serious in the first session, we don't have to. At some point, we'll get a chance to explore your history, your reasons for coming to therapy, the goals you have, and more.At the end of the session, we'll connect on a general outline or roadmap for future sessions, if you feel like we're a good fit.
No preparations are necessary! I can understand if you feel some anxiety meeting a new person and not knowing what to expect. If you're apprehensive, I can talk you through how a first session typically goes once we meet.If you are looking to prepare, you're welcome to think about the following questions (but your answers are not mandatory-it's 100% okay if you're not entirely sure):*What concern has brought you to therapy?*How long have you been struggling with this?*How does this concern impact your daily functioning?*What coping skills do you currently use?*Is there anything specific you'd like your therapist to know?*Do you have any goals for therapy?
